SAGU defeats Sterling College courtesy to Hickey's 11 strikeouts

February 3, 2023

Waxahachie, TX – On Friday evening at Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team began their second series matchup of the 2023 season against the Warriors of Sterling College (Kan.).

Game 1:

After a dramatic contest with the home crowd on the edge of their seats, SAGU won the first game of the series.

Justin De Los Santos scored the game's first run after four innings of scoreless baseball after JV Verdin singled to left field, and the Warriors' outfielder was unable to reel in the bouncing ball.

The SAGU defense, which was stifling, was led by pitcher Matthew Hickey. Hickey struck out 11 batters in five innings.

Reagan Smith was also a standout pitcher for the Lions in the ballgame, striking out four Warriors batters.

Bryson Collins scored on an unearned run after Timothy Compomizz flew out to the right field, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Cornacchione's Corner

"Our guys battled in the elements and found a way to execute when it mattered.  Not pretty, but it was a good team win behind two good outings on the mound." said SAGU head baseball coach Matt Cornachione
