Lions rout Wiley College in doubleheader with a flurry of hits

February 28, 2023

Waxahachie, TX – On Tuesday evening in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team played in a seven-inning doubleheader versus Wiley College.

Game 1:

Game one of the seven-inning doubleheader was won handily by the SAGU Lions, 21 to 7. Starting the game on the mound for SAGU was Reagan Smith. Smith pitched three innings without allowing an earned run. As the game's closer, Hamilton Moye came into the game and successfully recorded the game's final out.

The crushing triumph was spurred on by the Lion's offense. Six players had two hits in the game, while SAGU's bats totaled 21 runs on 20 hits.

Justin De Los Santos, JV, Verdin, and Timothy Compomizzi, had multi-RBI games. Justin was a stand-out performer for SAGU as he had four RBIs in the Lion's victory, but the entire Lion's offense was unstoppable.

Pitches-Strikes: Reagan Smith (48-35), Grant McManus (29-20), Hayden Mullins (30-19), Ryan Avalos (27-13), Hamilton Moye (1-1)

RBI: Jarden Kirk, Craig Venable, Corinthian Jones, Bryson Collins, Justin Delossantos (4), Timothy Compomizzi (3), JV Verdin (3), Dominic Padilla, Matt Daiy, Eric Crum, Cade Hendricks, Avery Chatman

Game 2:

Following a brief intermission, the SAGU Lions won game two of the doubleheader by a score of 7-5.

Ethan Nors' performance on the mound, which included two strikeouts in one inning pitched, was encouraging for SAGU. Trevor Proefrock contributed some substantial work out of the bullpen, striking out three Wiley hitters and only allowing three hits.

Offensively the stand-out performer for SAGU was Nick Mosley, as he reached base twice, scored once, and had a clutch RBI.

JV Verdin added two more RBIs, and the Lions' baserunning overall was excellent. Late in the game, when the Lions were in trouble, Cade Hendricks came in and saved them by getting the final batter to fly out.

Pitches-Strikes: Ethan Nors (24-14), Trevor Proefrock (52-31), Kaden Kneip (27-14), Cade Hendricks (8-5)

SB: Matt Daiy, Craig Venable (2), Bryson Collins (2)

Cornacchione's Corner

"Impressive offensive performance and approach in game one. We had to scratch a little harder in game two, but our guys added on throughout the game. I like where we are at heading into conference play," said SAGU head baseball coach Matt Cornachione.
