Waxahachie, TX - Reagan Smith, a junior pitcher at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU), embodies resilience and faith in the face of adversity. While his talent on the mound impresses fans, it's his journey of overcoming not one, but two heart surgeries that truly inspires.
At just nine years old, Reagan faced his first open-heart surgery to remove a subaortic membrane, a rare condition threatening his blood flow. Recalling the fear leading up to the surgery, Reagan found solace in repeating a simple mantra: "In my surgery, I will trust in Jesus." This unwavering faith carried him through the procedure and months of recovery, allowing him to return to the baseball field stronger than ever.
Fast forward to his freshman year at SAGU, Reagan's dreams were momentarily halted by the news of a worsening leak in his aortic valve. Despite the setback, Reagan faced his second open-heart surgery with the same steadfast faith and determination. Supported by the love of his family and the promise of Genesis 50:20, Reagan embraced the journey ahead, knowing that God's plan was at work.
Following the surgery, Reagan embarked on a grueling road to recovery, fueled by his lifelong love for baseball and unwavering spirit. Defying expectations, he graduated from cardiovascular therapy ahead of schedule and eagerly returned to the diamond. His comeback was nothing short of remarkable, marked by his first collegiate start and victory on the one-year anniversary of his surgery.
Today, Reagan stands tall as a key player in SAGU's pitching rotation, a testament to the power of his faith. Through it all, he remains grounded, recognizing the hand of God in every triumph and trial. His story serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring teammates, fans, and all who hear it to trust in God's plan and persevere against all odds.
