Lions Baseball Roars into 2025 with Thrilling Doubleheader at the Coach Calderone Invitational

January 25, 2025

Phoenix, AZ – The Nelson University Lions Baseball team opened their 2025 season with a high-energy doubleheader at the Coach Calderone Invitational in Glendale, Arizona. Facing off against Simpson University and Arizona Christian, the Lions showcased flashes of brilliance across two battles that set the tone for the season.

Game 1
The Lions roared into action against Simpson University, securing a commanding 22-10 victory. Senior Nick Mosley led the offensive charge, going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs and four stolen bases. Freshman Tate Thrasher delivered a game-changing home run in the eighth inning, highlighting the team's relentless energy at the plate. Senior Xavien Thompson also contributed with two runs scored and a stolen base.

On the mound, Zeke Holder picked up the win, demonstrating poise in key moments to limit Simpson's offensive surges. The Lions capitalized on defensive errors, keeping consistent pressure and piling up runs across multiple innings.

Game 2
Under the evening lights, Nelson faced a tough Arizona Christian team. Despite their best efforts, the Lions fell 10-0, struggling to find their offensive rhythm against the Firestorm's dominant starter, P. Robertson. Senior catcher Eli Lyons tallied one of the six hits for the Lions, providing leadership behind the plate. Kaden Moeller and Mitchell Baker also recorded hits, but Arizona Christian's pitching kept the Lions in check.

The Lions displayed flashes of defensive excellence, including key plays by Wesley Flatt and the versatility of Blair Speas, but ultimately couldn't overcome the Firestorm's offensive power.
