Sterlington, LA – The Nelson University Lions opened the 2025 Cajun Collision Tournament with a hard-fought doubleheader, falling in a tight contest against Indiana University Kokomo before bouncing back with a thrilling win over Georgetown College (Ky.). Â
Game 1
In a tightly contested opener, Nelson University took the field with high energy, striking first in the bottom of the first inning when Andrew Ortiz delivered a clutch RBI single to bring home Blair Speas. The Lions battled throughout the game, with Nick Mosley collecting three RBIs and Ortiz finishing 3-for-4 at the plate. Â
Despite a strong pitching effort from Shawn Robertson, who allowed only two runs in four innings, a three-run fifth inning from IU Kokomo proved to be the difference. Layton Mogford kept the Lions within striking distance, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. Â
Nelson had a chance to even the score in the seventh, as Wesley Flatt reached third on a pair of wild pitches before Mosley's sacrifice fly brought him home, but the Lions ultimately fell just short. Â
Game 2
The second game of the day featured an offensive explosion, as the Lions bounced back in dramatic fashion. Trailing 4-1 after two innings, Nelson erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second, ignited by a two-run double from Josh Pinter and a two-RBI single from Zeke Holder.
Georgetown responded with a five-run fifth inning and two solo homers in the sixth to tie the game at 12-12. But in the bottom of the eighth, Pinter once again stepped up in the clutch, delivering the go-ahead RBI single to put Nelson on top for good. Â
On the mound, Justin Dunlap took control in the late innings, firing three shutout frames with four strikeouts to secure the win. Â
