Goodwell, Okla - The Nelson University Baseball team capped off a dominant weekend with a 16-4 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Monday, completing a three-game SAC sweep on the road.
The Lions (22-18) erupted for 13 runs over the final three innings, turning a close 3-3 game into a runaway victory behind timely hitting and clutch pitching. Catcher Eli Lyons led the offensive barrage, going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs, including a two-run home run in the top of the ninth. Andrew Ortiz continued his power surge with a solo shot in the first inning and finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs.
Nelson broke things open with a six-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Lyons and a two-run bunt single turned error by Jaxson Bates, who later launched a two-run homer in the eighth. In total, seven Lions drove in runs, and five recorded multi-hit performances as the team racked up 17 hits.
On the mound, Blaine Vaughan earned the win in relief, tossing two innings and allowing just one unearned run. Dylan Zajicek closed out the final two frames without allowing an earned run.
With the sweep, the Lions continue their climb in the SAC standings and extend their win streak to three games. Nelson returns home this Friday, April 11, to open a weekend series against Mid-America Christian University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM at the Lions Athletic Complex in Waxahachie.
