Box Score 2 Waxahachie, Texas | January 22, 2026 — The Nelson University Lions baseball team wasted no time setting the tone for the 2026 season, powering past Sterling College in a season-opening doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Lions Athletic Complex. Behind an explosive offense and timely pitching, the Lions claimed a pair of convincing wins to start the year 2–0.
Game 1
Nelson came out swinging in the opener, setting the tempo early with two runs in the first inning before erupting for a seven-run third to seize control of the game. The Lions' lineup was relentless from top to bottom, combining patience, power, and timely hitting to build a comfortable cushion. Nelson finished Game 1 with 11 hits, repeatedly capitalizing on scoring opportunities and applying pressure on the bases. Sterling attempted to rally late, but Nelson's pitching staff limited the damage and closed out the 12–7 victory, giving the Lions a confident opening statement to begin the 2026 campaign.
Game 2
The nightcap tested Nelson early, as Sterling jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the opening frame. The Lions responded methodically, keeping the game within reach before unleashing a decisive offensive surge. Nelson broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning, turning a close contest into a commanding lead. The Lions piled up 16 hits, highlighted by Ethan Starks' home run and three RBIs, while Odnal Rivera and Joshua Pinter each drove in two runs. Drew Ortiz sparked the offense with three hits and two doubles, setting the tone at the top of the order. On the mound, Dylan Zajicek picked up the win in relief, and Cash Eckermann closed things out as Nelson completed the sweep with a 12–5 win.
