SAGU Ends Regular Season with Back-to-Back Sweeps

Waxahachie, TX – The SAGU Volleyball team ended the 2021 regular season with back-to-back sweeps over Wiley College and John Brown University. The Lady Lions beat Wiley with scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-10 on Thursday night in Marshall, Texas. They then defeated John Brown University in their final regular season game of the 2021 season with scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-13 on Friday night in the Sheaffer Center Gymnasium. SAGU Volleyball ended the regular season 23-8 overall and 15-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
 
GM 1:
The Lady Lions were in the driver's seat from beginning to end on Thursday night as they faced Wiley College on the road. SAGU defeated Wiley by a margin of eight or more points in each set including a big 25-10 set three victory.
 
Ava Myers led the offense with 12 kills hitting .500 on the night, and Alexis Mealer added 11 kills while hitting .647. Emma Tompkins had a great defensive night as she totaled four blocks while adding four kills. Tessa Glick led the team in digs with ten while Faith Marroquinn and Riley Burcham added seven digs each. Burcham also totaled 36 assists.
 
As a team, the Lady Lions finished the night with .415 hitting percentage while holding Wiley College to .041 hitting percentage.
 
GM 2:
SAGU took on John Brown University in their final regular season game of the 2021 season as well as their final regular season conference game. The Lady Lions started the first set with a 6-0 run and won 12 of the first 14 points. After taking the set one victory, the Lady Lions went on two 5-0 runs in set two and took a 25-17 victory. The Lady Lions dominated set three as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 24-10 lead, and they finished the sweep with an Alexis Mealer kill.
 
Mealer saw one of her best games of the season as she totaled 16 kills while hitting .333 on the night. She also added five digs and five block assists. Abby Wells added nine kills hitting a huge .438. Emma Tompkins had a great defensive night up front as she totaled 8 blocks, but she also added six kills and hit .429. Tessa Glick led the Lady Lions backcourt totaling 18 digs while Riley Burcham and Madison Petten added nine digs each. Burcham also had 37 assists.
 
As a team the Lady Lions hit .274 for the night with 41 kills. They also added 12 total blocks and 65 digs.
 
Up Next:
SAGU will now head into the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. Their first game will be Tuesday, November 9. The location and opponent has yet to be determined.
