Bellevue, NE. – The SAGU volleyball team split a pair of matches to open up the Labor Day Classic tournament in Bellevue, Nebraska, falling in five sets to Mayville State University but bouncing back to sweep Baker University in three sets.
Game 1:
SAGU battled Mayville State for five sets, but the Lions were unable to close out the match. In set one SAGU went up 19-18, but it was a string of five straight points from Mayville that put the Lions away. They fought their way back into the match winning the next two sets, but injuries derailed the Lions as they were not able to close out losing a tough fourth set 27-25 and ultimately falling in the fifth set 15-8.
Highlights:
- Ava Myers had another stellar performance with 26 kills, 12 digs, and a .339 hitting percentage
- Riley Burcham had 62 assists and 13 digs giving herself another double-double
- Faith Marroquin led the SAGU defense with 29 digs
- Tessa Glick followed suit with 23 digs
Game 2:
SAGU bounced back in game two against Baker University in dominant fashion. The Lions swept their sixth game of the 2021 season and led Baker in kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. SAGU went on a 6-1 run to close out set one and never looked back. They went on to win the next two sets by a margin of six points in set two and nine points in the final third set. As a team the Lions had 34 kills, 10 blocks, and 7 aces.

The Lions will play their final two games of the Labor Day Classic on Saturday. In game one they will face Rocky Mountain College at 11:00 AM. In game two they will face Montana Tech at 3:00 PM.
