Emma Tompkins, smashes kill after kill in Lady Lions sweep

October 15, 2022

Goodwell, OK: The No. 9 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team road-tripped to face the Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) Aggies. The Lady Lions dominated every significant statistical category in the Sooner Athletic Conference clubs' opening game of the 2022 campaign, resulting in a fiery contest.

Hard hits, powerful serves, and drawn-out physical rallies characterized the second match between the Aggies and Lions. Each side is playing wonderfully on defense, making the hitters work extremely hard and producing another thrilling game.

However, the Lady Lions (20-0, 12-0) steamrolled OPSU in three sets, 25-8, 25-22, and 25-20.

Lion Review

  • Riley Burcham denied an Aggie kill attempt, giving the Lady Lions the game's first points.

  • Emma Tompkins' performance was remarkable from the beginning to the end of the road game against the Lady Lion's Sooner Athletic Conference matchup.

  • OPSU scored only 8 points in the opening set due to the Lady Lions' efficient offense and defense.

  • In addition, Ava Myers and Riley Burcham performed a very polished opening set preceding Emma Tompkins' impressive start.

  • The underclass of the Lady Lions squad stepped up and played with composure and fierceness in the second set, despite the Aggies' best efforts to make it much more competitive.

  • In the second set, when Tessa Glick and Riley Burcham set up Alexandra Bonnett and Lilly Hanna for kills, they displayed their incredible length and athleticism at the net.

  • The Lady Lions would have a 2-0 match series lead going into the game's third set courtesy of a kill via Emma Tompkins.

  • The Lady Lions quickly overcame OPSU's modest 2-point lead in the third set, their largest lead of the day.

  • Emma Tompkins, who had the most kills throughout the match, led the Lady Lions to victory, sweeping OPSU for the second time in the 2022 campaign.

More from Moore:

"SAGU Volleyball had a very good win today over OPSU. Our kids played a very strong match today. We are continuing to make strides. Emma Tompkins was the player of the match. She played at an All-American level. Both of our middle hitters were good today. Karena Tipton had so many big blocks and changed many shots with her long arms at the net. 22-0 and 14-0 in the conference. This was a very good weekend for our program. We can't wait to play at home next weekend." SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
