Lady Lions crowned 2022 SAC regular season Champions.

November 1, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: The undefeated No. 8 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team hosted cross-town rival No. 23 Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) in the Sheaffer Center in Waxahachie, Texas. The regular season title would be determined by the outcome of the match between the top two teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). Andrea Malek, a star defender for the TWU Rams, had 27 digs against Southwestern Christian on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas, to record 25 digs for the eighth time this season. Additionally, Malek is second in the NAIA this year with 6.69 digs per set. The Lady Lions would need to effectively distribute the ball and control play at the net to claim the SAC regular season championship.

The Lady Lions (28-0, 19-0) crushed TWU in four fiery sets, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20, and 25-20, to crown themselves as the SAC regular season champions.

Lion Review

  • The Lady Lions started the game in championship style by outplaying the Rams' defense at the net. Swings from the Lady Lions were solid and dynamic.

  • In the first set of the match, Riley Burcham would make early connections with her twin tower outside hitters, Alexandra Bonnett and Emma Tompkins.

  • Ava Myers would unexpectedly front-hand punch a Madi Petten dig that she avoided by stooping to one knee, shocking the TWU defenders.

  • The Lady Lions had to take a timeout as the Rams pulled away to an early 14-9 scoring lead. SAGU would reorganize, use brilliant passing to confuse the Rams, and force TWU into back-to-back blunders.

  • Riley Burcham would stand like an oak tree and execute a powerful block at the net. Riley Burcham would then connect consecutive outstanding plays, including a service ace over the net.

  • After a tremendous kill, Emma Tompkins would receive loud applause from the home audience.

  • The away team, the TWU rams, would win the first set 25-20. At the end of the first set, Riley Burcham had eight assists.

  • Samantha Rico's sharp vision allowed a TWU serve to flutter out of bounds, providing the Lady Lions their first points of the second set.

  • As Lindi Boling continued her stellar serving from the previous week's events, Emma Tompkins absolutely took control of the game.

  • The home fans began to clash and grumble about the Lady Lions' situation, but Karena Tipton would score to pacify them. A sequence of woos would erupt from the stands following Karena Tipton's kill. The 6'3 middle hitter would venture into uncharted territory as she scooped back-to-back digs.

  • Tessa Glick and Abby Wells would use their unique skills and abilities to add to the Lady Lion's scoreboard.

  • The game's finest defensive play was made by Lindi Boling and her pal Madison Petten, who rescued a TWU point that was only millimeters from the ground.

  • The Lady Lions would feed the ball to Abby Wells, who would finish the second set.

  • In the third set, the Lady Lions' assault would force the Rams to take a timeout. At this juncture, both clubs were engaged in intense competition, fighting hard to prevent the other from gaining an advantage.

  • The enthusiasm of the home fans, which exploded at every swing, dig, and block, would significantly impact the Lady Lions.

  • The Lady Lions would unite in the decisive set to defeat Texas Wesleyan University and win the SAC regular season title for 2022.

  • With a total of 29 digs, Tessa Glick led both teams, and Abby Wells dominated play at the net with 14 kills.

More from Moore:

"Congratulations to our girls on a very hard-fought match tonight. These girls showed tremendous grit, and I'm so proud of them. I want to say thank you to Nicholas and Kali for all their hard work. They did a great job tonight, and I'm so proud of them.

Tessa Glick played her heart out. She led us in digs with 29. That is a crazy number. Abby Wells stepped up big tonight and had 14 kills and hit .444. Again, 28-0 and SAC Champions. They just secured an Automatic Qualification into the NAIA National Tournament. So proud of our team." SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.

"Most difficult thing in sports isn't winning games; it's staying united in the face of adversity; that's what these girls have done all year when faced with challenges. So proud of their hard work and commitment to the team. We have told them since August we are 19 deep, and every player has embraced their roles and stepped up when called upon to contribute on the court, but their contributions when they are not on the court may be even more important. On to the next one." SAGU assistant volleyball coach Nick Moore added.
