Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Darian Davis

The historic 2022 season of the legendary Lady Lions comes to a close

December 2, 2022

Sioux City, Iowa: For the back half of the 2022 NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship pool play matchup, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions matched up to face Northwestern College (Iowa) in the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Lady Lions had a lot to be proud of even after a heartbreaking loss to Marian University on Thursday night ended the renowned SAGU teams' hopes of adding a national championship to their illustrious season.

The Lady Lions (33-2, 20-0) were swept by Northwestern College 25-20, 27-25, and 25-16.

  • Madison Petten scored day two's opening set point for SAGU with a deft service ace.

  • Then super seniors Riley Burcham and Emma Tompkins combined their talents for a beautiful tandem block at the net.

  • The most contested set was the second one, with the most lead changes and tied scores.

  • The Lady Lions had 11 kills, their highest in a single set, but their eight mistakes allowed Northwestern to dominate the battle.

  • In the third and final set, Northwestern became the first team to sweep the Lady Lions in the 2022 season.

  • The Lady Lions' kills leaders were Ava Myers (11), Emma Tompkins (10), and Alexandra Bonnett (4). Alexandra Bonnett added two service aces.

  • Riley Burcham distributed the ball beautifully, leading SAGU with 27 assists, and the Lady Lions' top diggers were Lindi Boling (17), Riley Burcham (13), and Maddi Petten (8).

More from Moore

"There are a lot of emotions that go along with the season ending as it did. 33-2 is the best record in program history. There have been many firsts for our program. First Undefeated regular season, first outright regular season championship, first NAIA Opening Round host and win, and the first trip to Sioux City for the NAIA National Championship. Our kids have really grown in every way, and as a coach, I could not be more proud of all 19 players. The future for SAGU volleyball is very bright," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
