SAGU Sweeps Doubleheader Over OPSU

Goodwell, OK – SAGU Baseball took both games over Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Friday afternoon at Carroll Gribble Field. The Lions took game one 15-8 after an offensive explosion while a great pitching performance led SAGU to the 2-1 victory in game two. The Lions now sit at 21-7 on the year and 7-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
 
Game One
 
SAGU stole the lead late in the game in a 15-8 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Friday. The game was tied at eight with the Lions batting in the top of the eighth when JV Verdin hit a solo home run to take the lead 9-8. SAGU would pour on seven more runs after that.
 
Both offenses were strong at the plate as SAGU collected 17 hits and OPSU collected 10 in the high scoring affair. SAGU took an early lead in the second inning when Craig Venable doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Aggies tied things up at eight when Ethan Hunt homered on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.
 
Logan Mann took the win for SAGU. The righty went three innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out two and walking zero. Austin Jacobs took the loss for OPSU. Jacobs surrendered six runs on eight hits over two innings, walking zero.
 
Ethan Nors started the game the Lions. The right hander allowed ten hits and eight runs over five innings, striking out five.
 
The Lions tallied 17 hits as Luis Salazar, Ben Bills, Bryson Collins, JV Verdin, Craig Venable, Timothy Compomizzi, and Cade Dorethy each managed multiple hits for SAGU. Salazar led the Lions with three hits in five at bats.
 
Game Two
 
Both teams were strong on the pitcher's mound Friday, but SAGU defeated OPSU 2-1. Michael Watson allowed just three hits to the Aggies.
 
The Lions got things started in the second inning when Luis Salazar singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
 
Watson was the winning pitcher for SAGU. The lefthander surrendered one run on three hits over seven innings, striking out 11. Colton Anderson took the loss for OPSU. The hurler lasted seven innings, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking one.
 
Ben Bills went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lions in hits.
 
The Lions will finish the series with Oklahoma Panhandle State University tomorrow in one, nine inning game starting at 12:00 PM.
