Spirit beat Lions due to a solid third quarter

Waxahachie, TX: The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team continued their 2022 season by traveling to Spirit Field on Saturday night to play Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ).

The SAGU Lions (1-1, 1-1) lost to OUAZ Spirit (2-0, 2-0) 39-12. A solid third-quarter showing by the OUAZ offense propelled them to win the battle between the defensive juggernauts in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).

Lion Review

  • Early on, OUAZ showed bravery by attempting to retain the ball on fourth downs.

  • This tactic would spread, as both teams kept their punters at bay on their opening attacking stands.

  • Linebacker Christopher Bacos successfully blocked the opening punt attempt of the contest.

  • With the field goal unit on the field and Bacos' effort, the SAGU offense was in a great position to score, but Ryan Lewis was forced to scramble and land in a difficult situation.

  • Keaton Dudik responded brilliantly and, with a 17-yard pass play, advanced the Lions into Spirit territory.

  • Dudik and Briley Green would make another successful pass connection, gaining 29 yards in the air on consecutive snaps.

  • The game's first touchdown was scored by Zackariah Johnson, who ran a 24-yard route while ducking outside and into the corner of the end zone.

  • When OUAZ attempted to retaliate with a coordinated strike of their own, Isaac Gowdy dismantled a long bomb attempt.

  • Spirit settled for three points with 7:28 left in the second quarter, but they would gain momentum to put the score 13-6 in their favor at the halftime break.

  • Even though Briley Green and Zackariah Johnson would successfully complete a second touchdown pass, OUAZ's offense in the second half of the game propelled them past SAGU.

  • The Lions' 225 total yards were insufficient in the end, as they would lose 39–12

Ellis' Edition

"Although we came up short against the number one team in our conference I'm very proud of our football players and coaches," SAGU football head coach Greg Ellis said.
