SAGU Lady Lions emerge from match against Texas Wesleyan Univ. as the only unbeaten team in the SAC

September 27, 2022

Fort Worth, TX: The No. 10 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team headed to the Sid Richardson Center to face the No. 24 Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) Lady Rams in a matchup of the two best teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).

The 2021 SAC regular-season champion Texas Wesleyan finished in a close second in the 2022 volleyball preseason poll behind SAGU, showcasing the depth of the TWU volleyball roster. Ruby O'Brien, a sophomore setter for TWU, and Lauren Crismore, a freshman outside hitter, were two players the Lady Lions paid close attention to in the encounter.

Thanks to a few Lady Lions who put up huge numbers and an energetic away crowd, the No. 10 SAGU Lady Lions handily dispatched TWU.

The Lady Lions (17-0, 9-0) clawed TWU (14-3, 8-1) in four sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.

Lion Review

  • Emma Tompkins crushed a kill with Riley Burcham's help to start the first set, providing the Lady Lions with a tried-and-true formula.

  • In the first set, the Lady Lions' outside hitters produced some excellent swings backed by the passing of Riley Burcham and Samantha Rico.

  • The opening set was concluded by Lindi Boling's service ace, which quieted the boisterous home crowd.

  • The Lady Lions responded to every TWU score with their own score in the second set, preventing the Lady Rams from gaining a significant edge.

  • Riley Burcham would deceive the Lady Rams blockers with a cunning service dump.

  • Riley Burcham would once more shock the home fans with a cunning service dump in back-to-back scoring plays.

  • As their teammates on the sidelines let out a robust cheer, Lilly Hanna and Tessa Glick would correspondingly add to the scoring fun for SAGU with kills and service aces.

  • As the Lady Lions' performance prompted TWU to burn a timeout, SAGU volleyball assistant coach Nick Moore urged his squad to play intelligently and with commitment.

  • Tessa Glick would swan dive to rescue a Lady Ram kill after the timeout, which resulted in another Lilly Hanna kill.

  • With her exquisite serving, Kya Bock would throw the TWU defense on its heels.

  • Karena Tipton would authoritatively and long-handedly block a Lady Rams kill at the net in the second set.

  • A bomb by Alexandra Bonnett that the Lady Rams were unable to return would earn the final point in the second set.

  • The Lady Lions and the Lady Rams produced an intense third-match set with the home and away supporters howling at one another with the threat of a match series sweep.

  • At ten all, SAGU would utilize a sharp eye to enable a Lady Rams serve to drift outside the lines.

  • TWU would avoid the sweep, bolstered by their home fans.

  • Abby Wells' fantastic slice in the fourth and final set brought the score to 13-9.

  • Lilly would smash a kill over the heads of the TWU defense and in the lines after Ram's feet became tangled.

  • The SAGU Lady Lions eventually emerged as the only unbeaten team in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

More from Moore:

"What a great night of volleyball. Our kids stepped up and competed in a wonderful volleyball match. All respect to TWU and their team. They have so many weapons that they can attack you with. I'm very proud of our girls. Riley Burcham had a fantastic match with 41 assists and 15 digs, but the number of the night for Riley was six kills on ten attempts with only one error. She had a .500 hitting percentage. Ava led us in kills with 15, but 7 of those came in the 4th set. She was a difference maker down the stretch. Our defense was very good tonight. Tessa led the way with 29 digs. Riley and Madi added 15 each. Lindi Boling had ten digs and had a .933 passing percentage. Our block was very good as well. Karena Tipton had one solo block and four assist blocks. We had a very balanced attack, leading to a very good win. 17-0 and 9-0 in the conference. Good start," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
