Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Darian Davis

The Lady Lions' debut conference match was one for the ages

September 27, 2022

Chickasha, OK: In their first conference game of the 2022 season, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions traveled to face the University of Science and Arts (USAO) Drovers on McLaughlin Field.

Emma Rice, a Drover forward, selected for four All-American teams in her career, would be a critical opponent for the Lady Lions to contain going into the game. She has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to contribute at a very high volume. After the 2021 season, Rice was chosen as the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Player of the Year for the second time in her career.

Lions Review

  • Early in the game's first half, Emma Rice attacked the SAGU goal box, but Zoe Boldt, the standout SAGU goaltender, stopped her initial attempt.

  • USAO dominated the possession of the ball and, as a result, would be able to attempt numerous shots on goal, but keeper Zoe Boldt would smack and punch all Drover tries away from the net.

  • In their opening conference game, defense was the recurring theme of the first half between the Drovers and the Lady Lions.

  • In the first half of the game, USAO was held scoreless by Zoe Boldt and the SAGU defensive backline.

  • Rice would breach the Lady Lions' tenacious defense in the second half to score the game's opening goal.

  • The Lady Lions would respond poised and confidently to score a goal of their own. Rylee Thatcher netted a scorching goal after receiving a superb assist from the team's captain Paula Moreno Gomez.

  • In the last minutes of the contest, USAO's Emma Rice broke the deadlock with a goal. SAGU would eventually suffer a lone goal defeat.

Paul's Pondering

"We played one of the top 25 teams in the country. 0-0 at halftime. Down 1-0 second half and came back to tie it up 1-1. Gave up a direct free kick on top of the box with less than 2 minutes left. We fought back and nearly scored again with less than 8 seconds left with the ball inches from the goal line. This is SAGU Women's Soccer. Resilience. Heart. Passion. My Assistant Coach and I are both humbled and honored to coach such student-athletes who proudly represent SAGU both on and off the field. Tonight's game will go down in history as one of the most memorable games I've ever coached. I love this team," SAGU women's soccer head coach Paul Hason commented.
