SAGU splits 2023 baseball season opening

January 27, 2023

Waxahachie, TX – On Friday afternoon in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team opened their 2023 season against the Avila University (Mo.) Eagle

Game 1:

SAGU would end the game convincingly, thanks to an impressive 2023 season pitching debut from Michael Watson. Watson tallied nine strikeouts on 103 pitches throughout his five innings of pitching.

JV Verdin scored the first run of the 2023 season after Justin De Los Santos doubled to center field. As the Lions profited from Avila's mistakes and errant pitches, SAGU would score in large quantities.

Smooth swings allowed the SAGU's, Bryson Collins and Matt Daiy, to cross the plate safely. Bryson Collins singled to center field to bring home Justin De Los Santos, then Craig Venable gave SAGU their largest lead of the game, 9-2 when he singled to center field to bring home, Collins.

Game 2:

Despite an outstanding pitching effort from Ethan Nors in the second game, SAGU lost to Avila 2-1.

Ethan Nors struck out 10 Eagle hitters in his seven innings of work. The fast-paced pitching of Nors made it challenging for Avila hitters to get into a groove.

Timothy Compomizzi scored the Lions' lone point, and the offense failed to score again before the game ended.

Cornacchione's Corner

"Two outstanding pitching efforts today from Ethan and Michael. We capitalized on their mistakes in game one, and they capitalized on ours in game 2. I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond collectively tomorrow." said SAGU head baseball coach Matt Cornachione
