Lions Win SAC Matchup Against WBU Behind A Pair of Ethan Stewart Goals

October 7, 2023

Waxahachie, TX - On a cool and windy Saturday morning at the Lions Athletic Complex, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions soccer team faced off against the Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers in a captivating Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) matchup.

Lions Review
Alex Castro set the tone for the Lions with his relentless and aggressive play on the defensive side of the field. His tenacity not only bolstered the defense but also ignited impressive ball movement offensively for the Lions. Javaughn Hines showcased his defensive prowess with a sensational acrobatic play that denied a threatening Wayland shot, illustrating the depth of talent on the backside of SAGU's defensive approach.

SAGU's freshman goalkeeper, Michael Smith, emerged as a standout player with five crucial saves, preserving the 0-0 tie as the teams headed into the second half. Smith's diving blocks and saves demonstrated his remarkable ability and athleticism.

Jafet Ramirez, Ethan Stewart, and Wenceslau Coimbra combined their skills, orchestrating beautiful passes and taking shots that kept the Wayland defense on high alert.

Raphael Racilan's exceptional ball handling skills were on full display as he gracefully maneuvered past multiple defenders with spins and jab steps. Pedro Figueiredo Mattoso and Ashton Leffring also made dynamo plays in the open field.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Wenceslau Coimbra found Ethan Stewart, breaking the tie with an electrifying score. The Lions Athletic Complex erupted with excitement. Moments later, Ethan Stewart capitalized on a shot that rebounded off the crossbar, securing back-to-back goals. The Lions sealed the victory with a final score of 2-0, and Ethan Stewart's two goals marked his second consecutive game scoring twice.

With this impressive win, the Lions, now standing at 3-1 in conference play, continue to assert their dominance in the SAC.
