Waxahachie, TX - In a spectacular display of skill and determination, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions football team wrapped up the 2023 season with a resounding 29-12 victory over the Texas College (TC) Steers at Lumpkins Stadium in Waxahachie, Texas. The game was not only a thrilling season finale but also a Homecoming celebration, bringing together the SAGU faithful to honor graduates and groups from the past and present.
Lions Review
The Lions took control from the start, showcasing their offensive prowess led by the dynamic Dakeevion Rose. Rose's powerful and speedy runs set the tone for the game, amassing significant yardage. His 34-yard run punched in the first SAGU score, and he followed it up with an impressive 11-yard run behind stellar blocking from the Lions' burly offensive line.
Quarterback Micah Smith connected with Justen Campbell for a 21-yard touchdown pass, marking Smith's first touchdown in a SAGU jersey. This promising play hinted at a bright future for the SAGU offense.
At halftime, the Lions held a commanding 21-6 lead over the Steers. The break featured a spirited halftime cheer performance that ignited the home crowd, setting the stage for an inspired second-half performance by the football squad.
In the third quarter, star receiver Paul Odidi made a highlight-reel catch, securing a 9-yard touchdown pass from Micah Smith despite double coverage in the corner of the endzone. The SAGU defense continued to dominate, forcing a safety in the fourth quarter.
Defensive standouts Jayden Holcomb, Keith Hargraves, Braxton Bailey, Lawson Fields, Quaveann Mitchell, and Isaac Gowdy led the Lions in tackles, while Lonterrious McClain and Lawson Fields each contributed an interception, turning the Homecoming game into a "No Fly Zone."
Punter Ryan Lewis showcased precision with deadly accuracy, contributing to the overall excellence of the Lions' special teams.
Individual Performances
Dakeevion Rose stole the show with an outstanding 247 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 attempts. Micah Smith displayed accuracy and poise, completing 11 of 18 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
Receivers
Jamal Long,
Paul Odidi, and
Justin Beaudion recorded over 100 combined receiving yards, adding depth to the Lions' offensive arsenal.

With the season concluded, the Lions will now enter the offseason to prepare for the 2024 season, building on the successes of this year and setting their sights on continued excellence in the future.
