Costa Mesa, CA – On Friday evening in Costa Mesa, California, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team played in their first road series matchup game versus Vanguard University (Calif.).
Game 1:
A total of six runs, including three that resulted from fielding mistakes, were scored against SAGU starter Matt Hickey by the Vanguard Lions.
The SAGU baseball team's first travel game saw the Lions having trouble connecting with pitches from Vanguard, suggesting that jet lag may have impacted their batting. In comparison to Vanguard's twelve hits, the Lions had a total of five.
Cade Hendricks singled to left field, and the single run brought in for SAGU's lone score was scored by JV Verdin.
Game 2:
Vanguard's pitcher threw hard for seven innings, holding SAGU without a hit and getting out of the one jam he did get into (hitting two hitters, walking one, and striking out five). This performance put him in a solid position to win the game.
In a game with relatively limited hitting, SAGU only scored one run and had two hits.
Avery Chatman singled through the left side of the field to advance Nick Mosley to third and bring home Matt Daiy for the first SAGU score in the ninth inning.
Game 3:
The two starting for the second game were VU's Dylan McDonald and SAGU's Michael Watson, both of whom had strong performances. Both pitchers pitched a scoreless first inning but would give up a run in the next.
In the first stanza, SAGU got things going offensively with two early walks that swiftly placed two on base. McDonald struck out and had a pop-out, but a single brought in the game's opening run by Alejandro Garcia, giving SAGU its first series lead. It would, however, not last.
SAGU ultimately had more hits than Vanguard, but a flyout to center field would give the home team the win in the game's final inning.
