Lady Lions blister the ball in 2023 softball season opener

February 4, 2023

Waxahachie, TX – On Friday afternoon in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions softball team opened their 2023 season against the Royals of Ecclesia College.

Game 1 & 2:

With two run-rule victories on Saturday, the Lady Lions had an excellent start to their 2023 campaign.

SAGU would easily defeat the Royals in their first game, which they won 17-1, and their second game that day, which they won 9-1. The Lady Lions had several contributors to their resounding victories.

The Lady Lions outscored Ecclesia 26-2 on the day due to great pitching, strong defense, and powerful hitting.

Airiana Magdaleno was the Lady Lions' offensive standout, scoring six runs and five RBIs.

Sasha Jennings also had an intense night at the plate, collecting six hits and driving in 4 runs.

The first homerun for the Lady Lions this season and Cadence Hopgood's first collegiate home run went over the left field wall.

On the mound, Trista Ford and Annie Charanza were dominant, allowing only one run combined while striking out eight hitters.

Watty's Word

"The ladies came out blistering the ball. The team batted 500 for the weekend, scoring 26 runs in two games. The pitching was great, allowing two runs in the series," head SAGU softball coach Watty Watson said.
