Shreveport, LA – On Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Field in Shreveport, Louisiana, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team faced the No. 4 ranked Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) Pilots in a single-game faceoff.
Game 1:
The SAGU Lions were beaten 5-4 by the baseball squad of the Pilots on Thursday evening. The Pilots improved to a 23-6 record with the victory, continuing their upward trend. The Lions' overall record dropped to 21-8 due to the defeat.
Due to limited opportunities to advance runners, neither the Pilots nor the Lions managed to score during the second inning. A single down the right field line allowed two runners to advance and one to score, giving the Lions their first run of the contest. A solo home run to left field in the fifth inning gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage. The Lions did not relent and scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on two more home runs, giving them a 4-0 advantage.
For SAGU, Reagan Smith was outstanding on the mound. Smith had three strikeouts in six innings of play while only allowing three hits and no runs.
Pitches-Strikes: Reagan Smith (66-39), Michael Watson (56-33), Cade Hendricks (33-20), Matthew Hickey (12-8)
The Lions had three home run hitters in Avery Chatman, Matt Daiy, and Bryson Collins. Timothy Compomizzi also added an RBI.
Cornacchione's Corner
"Reagan was outstanding. The defense played well, and we competed. Good lessons to learn and adjustments to make heading into an important conference weekend," said SAGU head baseball coach Matt Cornachione.
