Waxahachie, TX – On Sunday evening at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team faced the No. 19 University of Science and Arts (USAO) Drovers in the final game of their first Sooner Athletics Conference (SAC) series of the 2023 season
Game 1:
In the final matchup of the series, the SAGU Lions completed the sweep of the No. 19 USAO Drovers with a final score of 4-3.
After a strong Drover start, SAGU's Matthew Hickey simmered down and pitched five top-notch innings for the Lions while only surrendering two runs. Reagan Smith, who entered the game and collected his second win of the weekend, was locked in on the mound, only giving up a single run in three innings of pitching. Cade Hendricks entered the contest in the ninth and final inning and shut the Drover's hopes down despite a small amount of traffic on the basepaths.
With a leadoff home run in his first at-bat of the contest, Matt Daiy ignited SAGU's offense. With two hits each, Matt Daiy, Timothy Compomizzi, and Nick Mosely were the Lions' offensive leaders.
With several runners already in scoring position, Alejandro Garcia produced a brilliantly placed bunt that brought in the game-tying run. Jared Kirk, the following SAGU batter, executed a superb squeeze bunt to take the lead, which SAGU would hold for the game's duration.
Cornacchione's Corner
"Our players did a good job in this game, defeating a determined Drover team attempting to retaliate. I liked how we started off in conference play, and now we want to keep improving," said SAGU head baseball coach Matt Cornachione.
