The SAGU Lady Lions championship chase ends in the SAC semifinals

May 6, 2023

Chickasha, Okla  – On Saturday afternoon in Chickasha, Oklahoma, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions softball team faced Mid-America Christian University (MACU) in a Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Tournament quarterfinals matchup and the University of Science and Arts (USAO) Drovers in a semifinals contest.

Lions Review

The SAGU Lady Lions scored all their runs in the game's final two innings, and their late scoring push was enough to help them survive past the MACU Evangels and advance to the SAC Tournament Championship game. SAGU collected the 3-2 victory in a game where neither team dominated the statistics battle.

Trista Ford, who had three RBIs and a home run, was the Lady Lions' star performer. Trista Ford hit her fifth home run of the 2023 campaign in the sixth inning.

For SAGU, Trista Ford also put up a strong defensive effort. Ford threw 53 strikes while facing 27 MACU batters on the mound.

The Lady Lions lost to USAO 4-3 in the day's second game.

McKenzie Schulze and Trista Ford each added RBIs during their at-bats. Six hits were obtained in the SAGU 32 at-bats.

SAGU's Annie Charanze produced a lively and compelling pitching performance. Annie Charanze threw 50 strikes altogether while facing 29 USAO batters and striking out six of them.

Watty's Word

"What a great playoff showing by these young women. Both I and this university have received their blessings. You won't find a coach that is more proud of his squad even after such a tough loss, but I loved the tenacity," head SAGU softball coach Watty Watson said.
