August 25, 2023
Waxahachie, TX - The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions soccer team opened the 2023 season on August 25 (Fri) evening in Waxahachie, Texas, versus Wiley College at the Lions Athletic Complex. As the first SAGU athletic squad to compete on the turf of the newly constructed Lions Athletic Complex, their first home game would serve as a momentous occasion for the SAGU women's soccer program. The Lady Lions trounced Wiley College 12-0 in the opening game thanks to a well-thought-out game plan, a staunch defense, and exquisite ball movement. The action of the first game would prove deserving of the historic occasion.
Lions Review
-
The Lady Lions clawed the Wiley Wildcats throughout the entire duration of the contest. The Lady Lions' attack was seamless and well-executed, and the gorgeous ball movement led to Anna Bewley stomping in the first scored goal inside the Lions Athletic Complex, assisted by Stephanie Hernandez.
-
Stephanie Hernandez made a pass, and Anna Bewly had no choice but to return the favor by giving Hernandez a dime pass back, which she then footed into the goal. The home crowd at the Lions Athletic Complex went berserk after the consecutive goals.
-
The freshmen tandem of Anna Bewley and Stephanie Hernandez didn't exhibit any signs of inexperience as they continued registering goals, boosting the SAGU advantage to 7-0 before halftime. Before the interval, Brooklyn Piper and Valeria Olivas Maldonado both contributed assists.
-
Paula Moreno Gomez would continue the Lady Lion's scoring avalanche. The trickery Gomez used displayed masterful footwork and ball handling as she faked out multiple defenders en route to the goal.
-
Serenity Story and Beatriz Rodrigues would add back-to-back unassisted goals. The SAGU bench didn't show any signs of letting up as they kept taking the Wildcats' possessions one after another and converting corner kicks into opportunities for shots on goal.
-
Anna Bewley, in her college debut, led SAGU with five goals. Stephanie Hernandez, in her first collegiate actions, added three goals. In addition, Anna Bewley led the squad in assists with two lovely gems.
Paul's Pondering
"The Lady Lions can be proud of their team chemistry tonight. We were excited to play in front of our SAGU fans whose support made the night a special night to remember, for it was our first game on our new field," SAGU head women's soccer Coach Paul Hason said.
