Lady Lions split in the San Antonio ShinDig Tournament Day Two

August 26, 2023

San Antonio, TX: On August 25, Friday evening, the No. 10 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lady Lions volleyball team sought to close day two of The San Antonio ShinDig Tournament with two wins against Carroll College (Mont.) and tournament host Our Lady of the Lake University.

The Lady Lions (2-4, 0-0) beat Carroll College (Mont.) in a three-set sweep but were then on the losing side of a three-set defeat at the hands of Our Lady of the Lake University.

Lion Review

  • Game one of the day's events saw SAGU sweep the opposition in three sets, largely thanks to Madison Petten and Samantha Rico. Thirty-three incredible digs were made by the defensive tandem together, each of which was executed with increasing athleticism.

  • Emma Tompkins, the team captain and reigning SAC player of the year, put up an impressive showing in game one with 11 kills and five blocks.

  • Riley Burcham had a 22 assists performance, her fifth of the season. Kya Bock contributed a game/season high two serve aces.

  • The 11 blocks totaled by the Lady Lions were the difference maker in the contest, allowing them to record their first sweeping victory of the 2023 season.

  • As the San Antonio ShinDig Tournament's host, OLLU, defeated SAGU in three tight sets in game two, SAGU struck a wall. Uncharacteristically, SAGU lost the statistical war in the assists column, and the opposition's determined defense brought on the difference.

  • Emma Tompkins recorded another five-block game, while Karena Tipton added one more. Taylor Cavozos and Tessa Glick both produced nine digs. Freshman Taylor Cavozos set a new personal season best with nine digs.

More from Moore

"Today we found ourselves at 1-1. We played really well this afternoon without Lindi Boling (wedding). Karena Tipton played very well in both matches, as did Emma Tompkins. We struggled in the service game tonight. The pre-season matches are finally over. 2-5 is not where we wanted to be, but all our goals for this season are still in place. We are looking forward to playing at home this weekend in front of the greatest volleyball fans in the NAIA," SAGU Head Volleyball Coach Hank Moore said.
