SAGU Baseball Dominates Opening Doubleheader Against Avila Eagles

Waxahachie, TX - The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions kicked off their 2024 baseball season in style with a doubleheader against the Avila University (AU) Eagles at Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie, Texas. In a day filled with remarkable performances, the Lions left an indelible mark in the opening chapter of their season.

 

Game 1
In the series opener, the SAGU Lions triumphed over the Avila Eagles with a commanding 7-3 victory in a 7-inning bout. At the plate, Avery Chatman and Dominic Padilla showcased their skilla, both going 2-4. Chatman contributed 2 RBIs and scored a run, while Padilla notched a run and an RBI. Nick Mosley added to the offensive onslaught with an impressive 3 RBIs.

On the mound, Matthew Hickey took the spotlight, delivering a stellar 5-inning performance and allowing only 1 run. Hickey also flexed his pitching prowess with 5 strikeouts, setting a formidable tone in his season debut.

Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lions continued their dominance, securing an 8-2 victory over the Eagles. Avery Chatman once again led the offensive charge, going 1-2 at the plate, scoring 2 runs, and adding another RBI. Zeke Holder contributed a memorable moment with the first home run of the Lions' season.

On the mound, Ethan Nors stepped up, recording the win with 4 innings pitched, 3 strikeouts, and allowing only 1 hit. The Lions' bullpen showcased their talent, conceding just 1 run in the remaining 3 innings.

Senior pitcher Matthew Hickey, reflecting on the day, expressed his joy, saying, "I was so happy to be out there on the mound with my team today. To start this season on the right note with my baseball family is a true blessing. Thank you, God."

The Lions' impressive start sets the stage for the second leg of their doubleheader against Avila in Waxahachie, Texas, on Sunday, Jan 28th, starting at 1 PM. As the Lions look to build on their early success, the excitement continues to grow for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead
