SAGU Baseball Opens Season with Doubleheader Delight Day Two against Avila Eagles

Waxahachie, TX - The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions' baseball season kicked off with an exhilarating doubleheader against the Avila University (AU) Eagles at Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie, Texas. In a day filled with remarkable plays and standout performances, the Lions stamped their mark on the back side of the opening chapter of the 2024 season.

Game 1
In the first game of the day, the Lions secured a nail-biting 8-7 win over the Avila Eagles. Offensively, Eli Lyons and Andrew Ortiz shone, both going 2-3 at the plate. Ortiz's standout moment came with a home run and an impressive 3 RBIs, while Lyons added an RBI and a double to his name. On the mound, Reagan Smith earned the win with a solid 5 innings, allowing only 1 run and notching 4 strikeouts.

The highlight of the game was Alejandro Garcia's exceptional display of flexibility, executing a near full split to secure a remarkable double play.
 

Game 2
In the second and final game of the day, the Lions continued their winning streak, securing a 2-0 victory over the Eagles. Zeke Holder showcased his hitting prowess, going 2-2 with a home run and 2 RBIs. Eli Lyons contributed with a triple and scored one of the two runs in the game. On the mound, Hayden Mullins pitched 3 innings without allowing any runs and Justin De Los Santos closed the game with an impressive 4 innings, allowing only 1 hit and tallying 4 strikeouts.

"This was a fun opening series but shout out to all the fans for their support, we definitely felt the love," expressed Avery Chatman when asked about the season-opening day two.
 

Looking Ahead
The Lions' victorious start sets the stage for their upcoming doubleheader against Central Methodist University (Mo.) on February 2nd at 12:00 PM at the Lions Athletic Complex in Waxahachie, Texas.
