Lions Fight to a 1-1 Draw Against Southwestern Christian in SAC Showdown

October 10, 2024

The Nelson University Lions men's soccer team hit the road on Thursday afternoon for a high-stakes Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) match against Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma. After a tense and hard-fought 90 minutes, the Lions secured a 1-1 draw, bringing their season record to 5-2-6 and 0-2-2 in SAC play.

Lions Review
It was a game of two halves as both teams vied for control under pressure. The Lions faced an uphill battle in the first half, failing to register a shot on goal, while Southwestern Christian applied heavy pressure with six shots. However, goalkeeper Leonel Cuellar remained a fortress in the Nelson goal, making three crucial saves to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Lions offense. In the 75th minute, Nelson's persistence paid off when Jan Zapata broke the deadlock with a clinical finish. The goal came after excellent work from Ramon Diaz and Javaughn Hines, who provided the assists in a well-executed move. Zapata's goal was a moment of pure quality, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead and raising hopes of a much-needed win.

However, Southwestern Christian responded swiftly. Just under a minute later, Ethan Bonaparte equalized for the Eagles, finishing off an assist from Andre Lopes. The sudden reply from the home team dashed Nelson's hopes of taking all three points, leaving the score tied at 1-1. Both teams battled hard for the rest of the match, but neither could find the winning goal.

The Lions put in a valiant defensive effort, with Cuellar making a total of five saves throughout the game. On the offensive end, Nelson managed six shots, with two on target, showing their improvement after halftime.
