Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lions Men's Basketball Team delivered an electrifying performance in their 2024-25 home opener against the Arlington Baptist University (ABU) Patriots at the Sheaffer Center. Under the annual "Texas Snowstorm" theme—a fan-favorite event where the first made basket prompts a flurry of ping pong balls to rain onto the court—the Lions thrived, showcasing their strength in their debut game since adopting the Nelson University name.
CJ Hall, a force on both ends of the floor, set the tone early and carried that momentum throughout the contest. Hall's 32-point eruption, marked by his sharp 8-of-19 shooting and an impressive 15-of-16 at the free-throw line, made him the undeniable catalyst for Nelson's triumph. Hall also contributed five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, demonstrating his all-around game and leadership that kept the Lions in control.
The Lions found themselves in a tight battle during the first half, leading by only two points at the break, 36-34. However, a pivotal shift came in the second half when Nelson surged ahead, outscoring ABU 54-49. Sharp shooting from beyond the arc and aggressive play in the paint helped secure the 90-83 victory.
Noah Jonker also made significant contributions with 11 points and four rebounds, adding depth and energy to the Lions' effort. Justin Collins, consistent from long range, chipped in nine points and showcased his defensive capabilities with one block and one steal. JJ Boling, meanwhile, provided a crucial 11-point performance off the bench, sinking three critical three-pointers that spurred the Lions' second-half surge.
Defensively, Nelson held their ground with 36 total rebounds and eight steals, disrupting the Patriots' rhythm and limiting their scoring opportunities. Though Arlington Baptist pushed back with a strong second-half fight led by their balanced offensive attack, it was not enough to overcome the late-game dominance of Nelson University.
