Tyler, TX – The Nelson University Lions wrapped up their 2024 football season on the road, battling under the bright lights of Clyde-Perkins Stadium against a formidable Texas College team. Despite a valiant effort, the Lions fell short in a 28-7 contest that showcased moments of promise but ultimately ended in disappointment for the visiting squad.
The Lions entered the game ready to compete but found themselves on the back foot early. Texas College opened the scoring with a momentum-shifting 75-yard pick-six by Terrell (TJ) Franklin, setting the tone for the evening. Nelson responded with resilience in the second quarter as quarterback Briley Green orchestrated a well-executed 7-play, 64-yard drive. Green capped the possession with a 2-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 7-7 and giving the Lions a much-needed boost.
However, Texas College quickly countered with an explosive offensive display. Quarterback Kendrick Connelly connected with Gauge Jordan for a 6-yard touchdown before finding Terrell Hookfin for a jaw-dropping 68-yard strike. Gregory Donaldson followed up with a spectacular 72-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter, leaving the Lions trailing 28-7 at halftime.
While the scoreboard may not reflect it, the Lions' defense showed grit and determination throughout the contest. Xavier Garcia led the charge with nine total tackles, including five solo stops. Aaron Thomas and Jace Williams each recorded crucial tackles for loss, while Pierson Rougeau and Jay Mosley added pass breakups that disrupted the Steers' aerial attack.
Joseph Chavez and Quaveann Mitchell, both standout defenders this season, continued to provide leadership, ensuring the Lions fought until the final whistle.
Briley Green displayed his arm strength and resilience, completing 32 of 50 passes for an impressive 311 yards. However, the Steers' relentless pressure resulted in seven sacks and two interceptions, stifling the Lions' offensive rhythm. Wide receiver BJ Clark emerged as a key target, hauling in five catches for 85 yards, while Zach Fuller showcased his big-play ability with a 41-yard reception.
On the ground, Dakeevion Rose led the rushing attack with 74 yards on 16 carries, displaying a strong effort against a stout Texas College defense.
