Lady Lions Roar into Next Round of National Tournament with Dominant Sweep Over Central Methodist

Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lady Lions, fresh off claiming the 2024 Sooner Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship, delivered a stellar performance to sweep Central Methodist University in the NAIA National Championship Tournament Opening Round. The Sheaffer Center roared with excitement as the Lady Lions showcased their dominance with a convincing 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-22, 25-21).

Nelson University, carrying a formidable 29-5 record into the contest, faced a battle-tested Eagles squad (26-7) in this high-stakes matchup. The Lady Lions, fueled by their home crowd's energy, demonstrated exceptional skill and composure. 

Key contributors led the way for the Lady Lions:  

  • Bailee Alexander emerged as the top scorer, tallying 9 kills with an impressive .350 hitting percentage, while contributing 3 total blocks.  
  • Lilly Hanna was unstoppable at the net, delivering 11 kills with a stunning .733 hitting percentage and adding 4 blocks to anchor the defense.  
  • Alexandra Bonnett added 7 kills and 2 blocks, ensuring the offensive firepower kept the Eagles at bay.  
  • Samantha Moore stepped up defensively with a game-high 5 blocks, frustrating the Eagles' attackers at crucial moments.
  • Setting the tone was Cassidy Hargesheimer, who dished out 16 assists, and Taylor Cavazos, who contributed another 14 assists. Tessa Glick was a defensive stalwart, leading the team with 14 digs.  

The match unfolded with gripping intensity. In the opening set, Nelson University capitalized on a .200 hitting percentage, finishing with 11 kills while limiting errors. The second set saw the Lady Lions elevate their game, boasting a .268 hitting percentage and 15 kills to edge out the Eagles. In the final set, clutch plays and defensive togetherness carried the Lady Lions to victory as they closed the match with a .211 hitting percentage and critical defensive stops.
