Dr. Shelly Zaldivar's Ceremonial Pitch Sets Stage for SAGU Lion's Triumph Over Wiley

February 20, 2024

Waxahachie, TX - In a gripping battle at the Lions Athletic Complex, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions clashed swords with the Wiley University Wildcats in a showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Before the first pitch, spectators were treated to a heartwarming moment as SAGU professor Dr. Shelly Zaldivar, a beacon of inspiration both in academia and community service, delivered the ceremonial first pitch, symbolizing unity and sportsmanship.

Lions Review
The Lions electrified the crowd with their stellar performance, clinching a hard-fought 8-7 victory over Wiley University. Leading the charge was Avery Chatman, whose explosive bat delivered a crucial 2-run homer, while also showcasing his prowess on the basepaths with a stolen base. Andrew Ortiz and Dominick Padilla contributed significantly, with Ortiz scoring twice and driving in a run, and Padilla notching 4 RBIs, including two doubles and a stolen base. Cade Hendricks also left his mark, scoring twice and displaying his power with a double.

On the mound, Neco Lopez earned the win with a commanding performance, tallying 4 strikeouts over 4 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs. The bullpen, anchored by Justin De Los Santos, Kaden Kneip, Hamilton Moye, and Hendricks, rose to the occasion, stifling Wiley's offense and securing the thrilling victory for the Lions.
