Lions Battle Hard but Fall Short Against No. 12 Webber International in Doubleheader

February 23, 2023

Babson Park, FL- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions baseball team journeyed to Babson Park, Florida, to take on the formidable No. 12 Webber International University. In a doubleheader brimming with intensity and drama.

Game 1
In the opening bout of the day, the Lions found themselves locked in a defensive struggle against a relentless Webber International squad, ultimately falling short in a hard-fought 4-0 defeat. Despite a valiant effort at the plate, with Xavien Thompson, Andrew Ortiz, and Dominick Padilla each notching a hit, the Lions struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. On the mound, Matthew Hickey delivered a commendable performance, pitching a complete game gem with an impressive 12 strikeouts. However, Hickey's stellar outing wasn't enough to stave off the potent Webber International offense, as he conceded 4 earned runs on 9 hits, earning him the tough-luck loss.

Game 2
Undeterred by their earlier setback, the Lions bounced back with tenacity and resolve in the second leg of the doubleheader, engaging in a closely contested battle against Webber International. Despite falling short in a narrow 6-5 defeat, the Lions exhibited their offensive prowess and resilience throughout the matchup. Avery Chatman showcased his dynamic skill set, going 3 for 4 at the plate, swiping 3 bases, and crossing the plate twice. Xavien Thompson mirrored Chatman's stellar performance, batting 3 for 4 with a crucial double, tallying 2 RBIs, and contributing a stolen base and a run scored. Andrew Ortiz and Cade Hendricks also made notable offensive contributions, each registering a hit and crossing the plate for a run. On the mound, Ethan Nors and Hayden Mullins delivered commendable efforts, with Nors pitching 2.1 innings and conceding 3 earned runs, while Mullins valiantly navigated 3.2 innings without allowing any earned runs, despite being saddled with the tough-luck loss.
