Lions Encounter Setback on Day One of Cajun Collision Tournament

February 8, 2024

Sterlington, LA - The SAGU Lions baseball team embarked on a journey to Sterlington, Louisiana, eagerly anticipating the 2024 Cajun Collision tournament. Day one brought forth a doubleheader against formidable opponents, Missouri Baptist University and Bryan College.

Game 1
In the opening match, the Lions faced a tough 6-2 defeat against Missouri Baptist. Despite the setback, Avery Chatman and Xavian Thompson showcased their offensive prowess, each tallying a hit and crossing the plate for a run. Andrew Ortiz contributed with a hit and an RBI. On the mound, Matthew Hickey battled valiantly but ultimately succumbed to Missouri Baptist's offensive onslaught, conceding five earned runs on six hits across six innings.

Game 2
The struggles continued in the second game as the Lions fell 7-1 to Bryan College. Dominick Padilla provided a glimmer of hope with a solid 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The lone run for the Lions came courtesy of an Andrew Ortiz home run, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide. Justin De Los Santos endured a challenging outing on the mound, yielding four earned runs on four hits in just two innings. The bullpen, comprising Jason Harper, Kaden Kneip, Hamilton Moye, and Grant McManus, fought admirably but couldn't stave off Bryan College's offensive onslaught.

Looking Ahead
Despite the setbacks on day one, the Lions remain determined to bounce back stronger on day two of the Cajun Collision tournament. Tomorrow brings new opportunities as the Lions prepare to face off against the University of Mobile and Texas A&M-Texarkana in Sterlington, Louisiana.
