March 23, 2024

Plainview, TX - The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions kicked off their conference series against the Wayland Baptist University (WBU) Pioneers with a bang, delivering a riveting doubleheader that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The clash, held in Plainview, Texas, showcased the resilience and prowess of both teams, leaving spectators hungry for more action as the series progresses.

Game 1
In a high-scoring opener, the Lions roared to a 14-10 victory against the Pioneers. Avery Chatman led the offensive charge, going 2 for 4 with a powerful home run, contributing to a stellar performance at the plate. Xavien Thompson and Nick Mosley also showcased their batting prowess, combining for multiple hits and RBIs, while Timothy Compomizzi added a crucial home run to the Lions' tally. On the mound, Ethan Nors secured his place in SAGU history, clinching his 23rd win and etching his name as the all-time wins leader. Despite a late push from the Pioneers, Hayden Mullins provided solid relief to seal the Lions' victory in the opening game.

Game 2
In a stark contrast to the first game, the Lions faltered in the second matchup, falling 7-1 to the resilient Pioneers. Eli Lyons notched the lone hit for SAGU, displaying his speed on the bases with a stolen base and run scored. Despite a valiant effort on the mound by Matthew Hickey and Justin De Los Santos, the Pioneers' offense proved too potent to contain, securing the win and splitting the doubleheader.

Looking Ahead
As the dust settles on the opening doubleheader, the Lions turn their focus to the series finale against Wayland Baptist University. With the series tied, anticipation runs high as SAGU aims to bounce back and claim victory in the crucial conference showdown scheduled for March 23rd in Plainview, Texas.
