Lions Roar to First Home Victory with 3-0 Shutout Against Sterling

August 31, 2024

Waxahachie, TX – On a beautiful Saturday evening at the Lions Athletic Complex, the Nelson University Lions men's soccer team captured their first home victory of the 2024 season with a commanding 3-0 win over Sterling College. The Lions, playing their second home game of the season, delivered an electrifying performance that thrilled the fans and solidified their early-season momentum.

The Lions (3-0-2) entered the match determined to secure a win on home turf, and they did so with style and precision. The first half was a tightly contested battle, with both teams testing each other's defenses. However, it was Nelson's Felipe Martinez who broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, calmly slotting the ball past the Sterling goalkeeper after a clever assist from Wenceslau Coimbra.

As the second half unfolded, the Lions took full control of the match. Alejandro Herrera extended the lead in the 62nd minute with a brilliant strike, courtesy of a precise setup by Pedro Figueiredo Mattoso. The goal was a result of excellent teamwork and quick ball movement that left the Sterling defense scrambling.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 81st minute when Teddy Nkamañyi found the back of the net, sealing the 3-0 victory for the Lions. The Nelson defense, anchored by goalkeeper David Calvete Beltrán, held firm throughout the match, limiting Sterling to just four shots, only one of which was on target.

Lions Review
Nelson's offensive onslaught was spearheaded by a combination of clinical finishing and creative playmaking. Felipe Martinez, Alejandro Herrera, and Teddy Nkamañyi each contributed a goal, showcasing the team's depth and attacking prowess. Assists from Wenceslau Coimbra and Pedro Figueiredo Mattoso highlighted the Lions' ability to break down defenses with intelligent passes and movement off the ball.

On the defensive side, the Lions were resolute, with Calvete Beltrán making a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet. The backline, led by Javaughn Hines and Dillon Cecil Du Toit, stifled Sterling's attacks and maintained a disciplined shape throughout the match.
