Lady Lions Roar to First Home Victory with a Dominant 6-1 Win Over Sterling

August 31, 2024

Waxahachie, TX – Saturday evening at the Lions Athletic Complex was nothing short of electrifying as the Nelson University Lady Lions women's soccer team secured their first home victory of the 2024 season in style, dismantling Sterling College 6-1. The Lady Lions showcased their offensive firepower and defensive resilience, leaving no doubt about their capabilities as they thrilled the home crowd.

The match began with the Lady Lions pressing hard, eager to break the deadlock early. It didn't take long for Nelson to find the back of the net, with Anna Bewley opening the scoring in the 17th minute, expertly assisted by Daisy Altamirano. Just minutes later, Altamirano herself doubled the lead, showcasing her sharp attacking instincts. Bewley struck again in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from Stephanie Arreola, giving the Lady Lions a commanding 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with Nelson dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Samantha Delgado added to the tally in the 52nd minute, followed swiftly by Bewley, who completed her hat-trick in the 54th minute, again thanks to an assist from Arreola. The Lady Lions' relentless pressure paid off once more in the 58th minute when Stephanie Hernandez found the net, pushing the score to 6-0.

Sterling managed to pull one back in the 71st minute, with Jessica Gautreau scoring off a well-placed assist from Emorie Sautter. However, it was too little too late, as the Lady Lions' defense remained steadfast, ensuring no further inroads from Sterling.

Lady Lions Review
The victory was a testament to the Lady Lions' well-rounded team effort. Anna Bewley was the star of the evening, netting a hat-trick that showcased her precision in front of goal. Daisy Altamirano was equally impressive, contributing a goal and an assist, while Stephanie Arreola's playmaking abilities shone through with two crucial assists.

Defensively, the Lady Lions were nearly impenetrable, allowing just one shot on goal throughout the match. Goalkeeper Samantha Longoria, alongside her defensive line, played a key role in maintaining control and ensuring Sterling's offensive efforts were largely stifled.
