Waxahachie, TX – In an electrifying return to their home court, the Nelson University Lady Lions battled valiantly against Oklahoma City University on Thursday night at the Sheaffer Center. Despite a roaring home crowd of fans, the Lady Lions fell just short, 57-54, in a tightly contested Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) clash.
From the opening tip, the Lady Lions brought the energy. Kate Miller came out blazing, sinking three crucial three-pointers in the first quarter to give Nelson an early edge. Her performance energized the crowd and helped the team jump to a 20-14 lead after the first 10 minutes. Teammate Wendy Clemmons also set the tone early, controlling the boards and dishing assists with precision.
As the game progressed, Clemmons put on a rebounding clinic. The point guard tallied a remarkable double-double, finishing the night with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists. Her relentless hustle drew admiration from fans and teammates alike. Meanwhile, Autumn Moore chipped in with 14 points off the bench, including key moments in the second half that kept the Lady Lions in the fight.
Despite their strong start, Nelson faced a late-game surge from Oklahoma City. The Stars capitalized on their fourth-quarter opportunities, outscoring the Lady Lions 20-11 in the final period. Oklahoma City's Amaya Gordon led all scorers with 27 points, including clutch free throws and a fastbreak layup in the final seconds to seal the victory.
The Lady Lions showed resilience throughout, highlighted by their team defense and ability to stay within striking distance. A final push in the closing seconds brought Nelson within one possession, but time ran out before they could complete the comeback.
