Early Explosion Propels Nelson University to Blowout Win Over Wildcats

February 4, 2025

Waxahachie, TX – The Nelson University Lions put on an electrifying performance at the Lions Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon, steamrolling Wiley University 17-2 in a statement victory. From the first pitch, the Lions showcased offensive firepower, defensive discipline, and a pitching rotation that kept the Wildcats off balance all game.

Right out of the gate, Nelson exploded for nine runs in the first inning, setting the tone for the game. Wiley managed a run in the opening frame, but the Lions' response was swift and merciless, stringing together timely hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues by their opponents.

The scoring didn't stop there. Four more runs in the second and two each in the fourth and fifth innings extended Nelson's lead beyond reach.

Key Performances

  • Wesley Flatt had an impressive game, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, and his performance was highlighted by a home run and a double that contributed significantly to the team's early offensive surge.
  • Nick Mosley launched a two-run home run in the first inning and finished the game with three RBIs and a stolen base, completing a stellar performance.
  • Tate Thrasher and Marcus Hernandez each drove in two RBIs, with Hernandez delivering a clutch two-run double in the fifth inning.
  • Jaxson Bates showcased his speed and plate discipline, reaching base multiple times and stealing a base.
  • Justin Dunlap (1-0) earned the win on the mound by pitching two strong innings, striking out four batters while allowing just one run. The bullpen continued to perform well, as Jake McMahan, Ryan Avalos, Hamilton Moye, Layton Mogford, and Blaine Vaughan combined for six strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.
  • Nelson's defense was outstanding, achieving a clean sheet with no errors while limiting Wiley to just two runs on eight hits. The infield executed crisp plays, and the outfield covered the ground effectively to support the dominant pitching staff.
