Waxahachie, TX — On a windy April Fools Day at the Lions Athletic Complex, Nelson University welcomed the undefeated No. 1 team in the nation, LSU Shreveport. The final score read 14–2, but the Lions (19–18) showed resilience and fire as they became one of the few teams this year to push the powerhouse Pilots to a full seven-inning contest.
Josh Pinter delivered the game's biggest highlight for the Lions, launching a solo home run in the sixth inning to give the home crowd something to roar about.
Andrew Ortiz continued his impressive stretch at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of well-placed singles. Wesley Flatt added an RBI knock in the third inning, scoring TJ Sweat who entered as a pinch runner following a walk drawn by Eli Lyons.
On the mound, Peyton Ramsey made the start and held his own early before giving way to a parade of Nelson relievers: Justin Dunlap, Dylan Zajicek, Shawn Robertson, Hamilton Moye, Vincent Rosas, and Matthew Ramos each took their turn against the high-powered LSUS lineup. The bullpen collected valuable innings as the coaching staff continues to develop its depth heading into the season's stretch run.
While three fielding miscues allowed LSU Shreveport to extend innings and capitalize with late offense, the Lions defense also turned a smooth double play and flashed moments of execution that will pay dividends moving forward.
