Lions Complete Sweep with Seventh-Inning Surge in Dominant Game Two Win

April 6, 2025

Goodwell, Okla. - Nelson University Baseball capped off a high-powered Saturday sweep with a 17-1 thumping of Oklahoma Panhandle State in Game Two of their doubleheader, riding a massive 14-run seventh inning to seal the victory.

The win lifts the Lions to 21-18 on the season and marks back-to-back games scoring 17 or more runs. Andrew Ortiz continued his tear at the plate, launching two home runs on the day—including a three-run blast in the final frame—and driving in four runs total.

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Nelson quickly erased the deficit with a run in the third. From there, it was a steady climb until the floodgates opened late. Ortiz's solo homer in the fifth gave the Lions a 2-1 lead, and they never looked back. The seventh saw contributions up and down the lineup, including a bases-clearing grand slam from senior catcher Tate Thrasher that put the game well out of reach.

Five Lions recorded multi-hit games, with Zeke Holder notching a 3-for-5 outing and two RBIs. Jalen Pinter stayed hot at the plate, collecting three hits and two RBIs of his own. In all, 11 different Lions crossed home plate, with 10 notching at least one RBI.

On the mound, Javier Balderas delivered one of his best outings of the year, tossing 5.2 innings of three-hit baseball while striking out five to earn his third win of the season. Hamilton Moye closed the door in the seventh, needing just 16 pitches to retire the side and secure the win. #WhereLionsFindTheirRoar
