Waxahachie, TX – The Lions faced off against the Oklahoma City Stars at the Lions Athletic Complex looking to secure a huge conference win. However, they ultimately settled for a draw, ending the match tied 2-2.
The Stars struck first in the first half, scoring a goal in the 13th minute taking an early 1-0 lead over the lions.
After the initial goal, no other scoring action occurred in the first half. The Lions recorded seven shot attempts, with three on goal, while the Stars had six attempts and two on goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again before halftime.
Most of the action came in the second half, with the Lions and Stars going back and forth throughout the period. Nelson came roaring back in the 68th minute when Senior
Maquan Aldridge found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
The Stars responded just three minutes later, scoring in the 71st minute to regain the lead and make it a 2-1 game.
Nelson once again answered in the 78th minute, with Senior
Joel Palmer scoring off an assist from Aldridge to tie the match at 2-2. Neither team was able to score again, ultimately ending the match in a draw.
Although the Lions did not lose, this is a game Nelson will likely wish they could have back. The Lions came out with a strong attacking presence in the second half, recording 14 shot attempts while scoring twice. In comparison, the Stars recorded just five shots in the second half.
On the bright side for the Lions, while they did not ultimately come away with the win, a draw is always better than a loss in the record books and could potentially benefit Nelson in the standings down the road.
