Lady Lions Take 2-1 Victory Over Texas Wesleyan Rams

Waxahachie, TX– The Nelson Soccer team faced a crucial head-to-head matchup against rival Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday night at the Lions Athletic Complex, looking to secure its first conference win of the season. The Lions did just that, defeating the Rams 2-1 in a hard-fought rivalry matchup.

Goals were difficult to come by for both teams, as Nelson and Texas Wesleyan remained scoreless through the first half. The Lady Lions applied heavy pressure throughout the opening 45 minutes, recording 12 shots with eight on target compared to Texas Wesleyan's lone shot attempt, which did not find the target. Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Nelson was unable to get the ball past the Rams' goalkeeper and break the deadlock.

The second half was a different story, with the Rams striking first and making the most of their limited opportunities. Texas Wesleyan found the back of the net in the 54th minute to take the first lead of the match.

The Lady Lions fought back, finally breaking through in the 75th minute when freshman Lizeth Moreno found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Jaylene Bosquez to even the score at 1-1.

Nelson was not finished, however. Near the end of the match, sophomore Anna Stovall delivered the decisive goal in the 86th minute, receiving an assist from senior Samantha Delgado to give the Lady Lions a late 2-1 lead. Nelson held on through the final minutes to secure the victory.

The win marked a crucial first conference victory for the Lady Lions in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The victory also brought Nelson back to .500 in both conference and overall play, improving to a 5-5 overall record and a 1-1 conference record.
