Waxahachie, TX– Following a tie in their previous match, the Nelson Lady Lions returned to the pitch Saturday looking to get back in the win column. Nelson answered the call with an impressive offensive performance, securing a 5-3 victory over the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies.
Mackenzie Gonzalez struck first for the Lady Lions in the 26th minute, finding the back of the net off an assist from
Daisy Ruiz to give Nelson an early 1-0 lead.
However, the Aggies responded with goals in the 31st and 52nd minutes to take a 2-1 lead and put the Lady Lions in a position to respond.
Nelson did just that, as senior leader
Samantha Delgado took control of the second half with a hat trick. Delgado scored in the 60th, 69th and 89th minutes, leading the Lady Lions' offensive surge and helping Nelson pull away late in the match.
Anna Stovall also found the back of the net during the second-half run, adding another goal to Nelson's attack. The Lady Lions' offensive explosion proved too much for the Aggies to overcome, as Nelson scored four times in the second half to secure the 5-3 victory.
Nelson also received contributions from across the lineup in the assist column. Along with Ruiz's assist on Gonzalez's first-half goal,
Ansley Meza,
Damaris Solis,
Gracie Hendley and
Jaylene Bosquez each recorded an assist for the match.
The Lady Lions finished with 13 shots compared to Oklahoma Panhandle State's nine. Goalkeeper
Delaney Murphy also played a key role in the victory, recording five saves to help Nelson secure the win.
The victory brings the Lady Lions back to .500 in both overall and conference play, improving to a 6-6-1 overall record and a 2-2-1 mark in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
