Lady Lions Battle Through Extras, Split Weekend Series at OPSU

Goodwell, OK | February 27–28, 2026 – The Nelson University Lady Lions opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a gritty four-game road set at Jim Quimby Field, battling Oklahoma Panhandle State in a weekend that featured resilience, extra-inning drama, and hard-earned lessons.

Game One: Defensive Duel Slips Away (L, 0–7)
The series opened as a tight contest through three innings before OPSU broke through in the fourth and fifth frames.

Nelson scattered six hits, including a two-hit performance from Elena Mendez and a pair of singles from Cadence Hopgood, but could not push a run across. The Lady Lions threatened early, loading traffic in the first and third innings, yet the Aggies turned three double plays to halt momentum.

Mendez took the loss in the circle, tossing 4.1 innings before OPSU plated seven runs across the middle innings.

Game Two: Extra-Inning Statement (W, 10–8 – 8 Innings)
The nightcap turned into an instant classic.

Nelson exploded for 13 hits and showcased depth up and down the lineup. Ava Fernandez delivered a huge three-hit performance with three runs scored, while Haley Ehlert powered the offense with three hits, three RBI, and two doubles.

After the Aggies tied the game at 7–7 in the seventh, the Lady Lions answered emphatically in the eighth. Fernandez singled home the go-ahead run before Nelson capitalized on defensive miscues to stretch the lead to 10–7.

Senior Braylei Pylant was tough in relief, earning the win and securing the save after 3.1 innings of clutch work. The Lions' composure in extras flipped the tone of the series.

Game Three: Comeback Composure (W, 5–4)
Saturday's opener saw OPSU jump ahead 2–0 early, but Nelson chipped away and responded with poise.

Layla Oliver sparked the lineup with three hits and an RBI sacrifice fly. Reese Yoder added an RBI single, and a sixth-inning rally—highlighted by a clutch pinch-hit RBI from Fernandez—gave the Lions the lead for good.

Junior Macie Blizzard earned her first win of the season in relief, while Pylant closed the final 1.2 innings to lock down the save. Nelson totaled 11 hits in the victory, showing patience and execution in key moments.

Game Four: Aggies Surge Early (L, 0–10)
In the finale, OPSU struck quickly with three runs in the first and five more in the second, building a cushion Nelson could not overcome. The Aggies finished with 12 hits and held the Lady Lions hitless in the contest.

Despite the setback, Nelson's pitching staff continued to compete through the final out as the team absorbed valuable conference experience.

Weekend Takeaways
The Lady Lions showed their offensive ceiling combining for 21 runs in their two wins and displayed resilience in pressure moments. Fernandez and Ehlert anchored explosive stretches at the plate, while Oliver's table-setting presence in Game Three proved pivotal.
