Lady Lions Drop Twin Bill to Texas Wesleyan on Senior Weekend Opener

Waxahachie, TX | April 24, 2026 — Senior weekend opened with intensity, emotion, and flashes of fight, but the Nelson Lady Lions came up short in both ends of a conference doubleheader, falling 5-1 in Game 1 and 5-1 again in Game 2 to cross-town rival Texas Wesleyan at the Lions Athletic Complex.

Game 1
For four innings, it felt like a pitcher's duel brewing in Waxahachie.

Nelson matched Texas Wesleyan punch-for-punch early, with Trista Ford and Ava Fernandez sparking offense and keeping pressure on the Rams' defense. The Lady Lions broke through in the fourth inning when Lacie Miller crossed the plate off a sacrifice RBI from Marcella Bryan, tying the game at 1-1 and injecting life into the home dugout .

But the fifth inning proved decisive.

Texas Wesleyan capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting, stringing together a rally that turned a tight contest into a multi-run deficit. A two-run surge in the fifth, followed by a towering two-run home run from Haylie Delarosa in the sixth, created separation the Lady Lions couldn't recover from .

Despite solid efforts in the circle from Braylei Pylant, Valerie Guzman, and Kallie Featherston, Nelson was held to four hits on the afternoon, unable to regain offensive rhythm late.

Game 2
Game two brought a similar script with a different opening act.

Texas Wesleyan struck first in the opening inning and never relinquished control, building a 4-0 lead by the fifth inning behind consistent contact and extra-base power . A three-run fifth inning, highlighted by clutch extra-base hits, widened the margin and put Nelson in chase mode.

The Lady Lions responded in the sixth.

With energy building, Elena Mendez reached and came around to score, and Trista Ford delivered an RBI double to get Nelson on the board and cut the deficit to 4-1 . But the rally stalled, and Texas Wesleyan added an insurance run in the seventh to seal the sweep.

Nelson matched the Rams in hits (7-7), but couldn't convert opportunities into runs, leaving multiple runners stranded in key moments .

Next Up
The series continues tomorrow with another doubleheader as the Lady Lions look to respond and defend home turf.
