Lady Lions Battle Through SAC Road Test in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, OK | April 3, 2026 — The Nelson University Lady Lions stepped into hostile territory at Allen Field for a four-game Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) series against Mid-America Christian, facing a relentless Evangel attack across two days of action. Despite flashes of offensive firepower and grit, Nelson ultimately dropped the series, with each game telling a story of momentum swings, missed opportunities, and resilience.

Game 1 – Nelson 2, MACU 5
Nelson struck first and showed early poise, manufacturing a run in the opening frame and adding another in the third behind timely situational hitting. Cadence Hopgood delivered a sacrifice fly and later an RBI knock to pace the offense. Elena Mendez led the way at the plate with a two-hit performance, while Juli King sparked energy with a triple. But defensive miscues proved costly, as MACU capitalized on early opportunities to plate three in the first inning and never relinquished control.

Game 2 – Nelson 2, MACU 8
Game two felt like a turning point opportunity for the Lions. After falling behind, Nelson responded with a two-run fourth inning, highlighted by Reese Yoder's RBI knock and aggressive baserunning pressure. But the fifth inning flipped the script. MACU exploded for five runs, taking advantage of defensive errors and timely extra-base hits to break the game open. Nelson's pitching staff battled, but the damage proved too much to overcome.

Game 3 – Nelson 5, MACU 8
The Lady Lions showed their most explosive stretch of the series in game three. After trailing early, Nelson erupted for four runs in the fourth inning, fueled by clutch hitting from Trista Ford and disciplined at-bats from Layla Oliver, who reached base multiple times and drove in a run. The Lions clawed all the way back to make it a two-run game. However, MACU's early offensive surge including a five-run second inning created a gap that proved just out of reach. Nelson finished with eight hits and continued to apply pressure late, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Game 4 – Nelson 1, MACU 7
The finale showcased Nelson's fight, even as MACU's pitching controlled the pace. The Lions scattered seven hits, with Layla Oliver and Lacie Miller each recording multi-hit efforts. Nelson finally broke through in the sixth inning, but MACU's steady offensive production including a home run and multiple run-producing swings kept the Lady Lions at bay. Despite the final score, Nelson continued to compete inning by inning, refusing to fade quietly.

Series Takeaways
Nelson showed flashes of offensive rhythm throughout the series, recording multiple multi-hit games and consistent pressure on the basepaths. Layla Oliver, Elena Mendez, and Reese Yoder highlighted a lineup that continues to trend upward. The difference came down to timely execution. Defensive miscues and big innings from MACU shifted momentum at critical points, something the Lions will look to clean up moving forward.

The Lady Lions return home with an opportunity to reset and respond.
