October 27, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: In a Texas Snow Storm-themed game against Arlington Baptist University (ABU) on Thursday night at the Sheaffer Center, the men's basketball team of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) commenced their 2022–23 campaign. The ninth basketball contest in the SAGU Lions and the ABU Patriot's history featured a ton of fast-paced, above-the-rim action. To the pleasure of the home crowd, the Lions were able to triumph in their home opener 90–43.

Lion Review

  • On an offensive rebound putback, Cortland Blake successfully converted on the first SAGU bucket of the 2022–23 season, a promising beginning to his return to the Lions squad. Following the opening basket of the season, SAGU supporters hurl ping pong balls onto the floor.

  • The technical foul would be accepted by SAGU, who would promptly elevate the pressure. Noah Boling would sprint to the corner and shoot a three-point jumper that only made contact with the net as it splashed through.

  • Tyler Kinghorn scored in the paint before a wave of substitutions, setting up cries of "Psycho T" from the crowded stands.

  • The first substitute scorer for SAGU would be Trace Boling. Boling's long-range shot would kiss the net.

  • Having Philbert Weekes at its back, the SAGU defense appeared unbreakable. Weekes, the center who measures 6'10, looked to be able to rebound the sun from the sky in his Lion debut.

  • The largest lead ABU could achieve before SAGU went on a blistering hot scoring spree was one point.

  • In the early half of the game, Brooks Haddock stabbed a shot from distance with a hand in his face, which astonished the home fans. Haddock, the three-point sharpshooter, acclimated to the three-point line in his new NAIA home without any trouble.

  • Against ABU, SAGU would enjoy a 49-26 advantage at the intermission. SAGU floor generals Keenan Gooden and Alerick Hall would distribute the rock with five assists apiece to ensure all their teammates were involved.

  • Dallas Smith, a freshman, led the game in scoring at halftime with 10 points on a solid 50% shooting percentage.

  • Keenan Gooden began to flirt with a triple-double to open the second half of the game. Gooden would show off his full range of abilities by assisting teammates, blocking shots at the rim, and snatching rebounds.

  • JJ Boling, a freshman who had early foul difficulties, scored all of his seven points in the second half of the game. The seven points included a top-of-the-key three that his freshman running mate Dallas Smith dished and a slam dunk that shook the entire SAGU campus.

  • Xi'an Todman came into the game with laser-like intensity and continued the onslaught of SAGU long shots by making both of his fadeaway three attempts.

  • Cortland Blake would finish the contest as the Lions' top scorer with 12 points, to accompany seven rebounds, and two blocks.

  • The Lions team dominated every significant game statistic. SAGU finished the game with 24 more points in the paint, 36 more bench points, 20 more second-chance points, and 12 more points off turnovers.

Deal's Declaration

"Very proud of our guys. We played really hard together and made the night fun. But the fans were incredible!!! The fans really set our school apart from the rest and create a basketball experience second to none," SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
