Lions and Saints compete till the final buzzer, Weekes snatches double-double

November 4, 2022

Waxahachie, TX: Friday night at the Sheaffer Center, the men's basketball team of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) continued their 2022–23 campaign against the Saints of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). The Lions were able to triumph 74-71 in an epic barnburner that was played out until the final buzzer, much to the delight of the home fans.

Lion Review

  • JJ Boling, a freshman, made a solid first impression for the Lions club with his energetic performance off the bench. In the first half, JJ Bolling made aggressive plays and shot 100% from the charity stripe.

  • Tyler Kinghorn would also make a strong early impression; the athletic forward's quick rim running resulted in several fast break baskets and simple opportunities at the rim.

  • In the game's opening period, Keenan Gooden grabbed six rebounds with his go-go gadget arms. The tall and lanky guard was dangerous on defense.

  • The shooter, Brooks Haddock, was running routes and taking up space on the OLLU defense's radar as he made two contested three-pointers that melted into the net.

  • The Lions led the Saints by 4 points at the halftime break.

  • The Saints would fight back in the second half by drawing closer with their brilliant bench's help after the Lions sprung out to a sizable lead.

  • Dallas Smith would make two crucial three-pointers in the second half to give the Lions a cushion to start the game's final phase.

  • Cortland Blake and Philbert Weekes, who play interchangeably in the frontcourt, scored a total of 15 points in the second half. Clutch buckets from both big men prevented the Saints from overtaking the Lions' advantage.

  • With a few seconds left, Noah Boling made the game's largest three-pointer, then dove for a loose ball to extend the Lions' home-winning steak.

  • In an effort to equalize the score and force an overtime period, Philbert Weekes blocked an OLLU guard's long ball heave attempt.

  • With 10 points and 12 rebounds at the game's conclusion, Philbert Weekes had a double-double.

Deal's Declaration

"What a tremendously hard-fought effort from the guys tonight. We are still learning and growing as a team; part of that is finding ways to win. I'm so proud of their resolve and look forward to where we can go as a team this season," SAGU head men's basketball coach Delton Deal said.
